Walking this neighborhood south of the St Mary Medical Center will pass a dozen places of worship as well as one of the most handsome urban neighborhoods in the city.

Departing from 10th Street, head north along Long Beach Boulevard before turning east into the ❶ ST MARY MEDICAL CENTER. Traverse the 18-acre campus before exiting through the 10th Street pedestrian gates to go south along Atlantic Avenue. On 9th Street there are four churches representing a rich diversity of architecture and congregations comprising of the FIRST LUTHERAN, FIRST FRIENDS, CITY LIGHTS AND FRIENDSHIP BAPTIST CHURCHES. These homes of worship are intermixed with large vintage homes and apartments including the ❷ LE GRANDE APARTMENTS, a Chateauesque-style building with a lush courtyard. Looping back up to 10th Street for one-block passes the Gothic Revival architecture of ST JOHN BAPTIST CHURCH. Head south down Olive Avenue until 7th Street to walk around ❸| ST ANTHONY CHURCH AND SCHOOL, whose two block campus mingles Gothic Revival and Mediterranean-style architecture between its academic building, gym, church and parish residence. The ALAMITOS NATIONAL GUARD ARMORY solidifies the northeast corner of the campus with its turrets, gun-slips & semi-subterranean bunker. At Atlantic Avenue & 7th Street is ST LUKE EPISCOPAL CHURCH, a collection of English Tudor Revival-style buildings oriented around three courtyards & a garden. Go north on Linden Avenue past TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH & a pair of historic landmark homes, the Victorian-Craftsman style REED HOUSE and Craftsman-Praire style KALE HOUSE. The Italian Renaissance/Romanesque Revival-style ❹SCOTTISH RITE TEMPLE dominates the corner of 9th Street and Elm Avenue. Cross Long Beach Boulevard on a worth-while detour to see the grand ❺ FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH at Pine Avenue at 10th Street before heading back to the hospital.
